Le Rocher de la Vierge
Written by Julian Hamilton
In the middle of a very French place lies a small, but very French restaurant called Le Rocher de la Vierge. Open for lunch and dinner, this Basque and south-western French restaurant, with a menu that changes every day, is definitely something special. Eating here on a sunny day, on the terrace, feels like taking a well-deserved nap in the park while not far away, children run around and street musicians play “Les amoureux des bancs publics” by Georges Brassens. Even the lonesome and witty serveuse, that I’ve met every time I’ve visited, plays into this picturesque and stereotypical image. As the menu changes every day it is hard to say what to recommend. However, the fish main course is always the most exceptional in my opinion. Though, if you feel that you want more of a brasserie type experience, the red meat option will not disappoint either. The appetisers are fairly small, but the main course and the deserts are good servings. Nevertheless, the only thing I would thoroughly recommend is to take it easy and enjoy the atmosphere. Take a break from all the stress!
Julian Hamilton.
P.S. Be warned, the lunch menu (even if fairly priced for what it is), is pretty pricey for us students.
