Written by Manoury Anggun et Lemazurier Mathilde
Ever thought about exploring cinemas in Toulouse but unsure where to find something unique, affordable, and truly authentic? Let us introduce you to a hidden gem in the heart of the independent film scene: The American Cosmograph, lovingly known as "Cosmo," located just steps from Place du Capitole.
Alongside renowned venues like the Cinémathèque (Saint-Sernin), ABC Cinema (Jeanne d’Arc), and Utopia (Borderouge and Tournefeuille), Cosmo plays a key role in keeping the spirit of independent cinema alive. It showcases films often overlooked by mainstream theaters (international films, documentaries, nouvelle vague classics, and more), offering thought-provoking works, many of which are recognised at prestigious festivals and other special events.
Cosmo charms with its three cosy screening rooms that evoke the golden age of film. Inside, vintage posters, quirky decor, and a mix of retro and modern seating transport you back in time. Occasionally, you’ll even have the chance to participate in post-film discussions with directors and filmmakers, deepening your experience. Films are screened in their original languages with French subtitles, broadening the cinematic experience. Tickets are reasonably priced at €8, with reduced prices at €4.50 available all day on Wednesdays, screenings before 1 PM, and late shows after 9 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Here, the magic begins the moment the film starts, with no ads to distract you — just sit back, relax, and let the story unfold. Cosmo is the perfect escape from the ordinary, where you can discover unseen and unheard films that dare to be different.
